Now, depending on what you want to achieve and how you want to customize the app and its features, you might want to apply certain plug-ins.
'DVB Dream' is a shareware Windows software used with PC tuner add-ons. (PCI or USB devices that you plug in to your computer). You can watch free-to-air tv or your paid subscription digital satellite, cable or terrestrial TV through your computer. Windows Mediacentre is rapidly becoming the only software unable to record multiple channels from each DVB tuner For the record: I have 2 DVB-T single tuners, a 7010ix with 2xDVB-T+2xDVB-S tuners and only the 4 DVB-T are enabled.
I realized that people are using cheap DVB-T tuner based on Realtek RTL2832U chip as spectrum analyzer, SDR (software defined radio) and even as osciloscope. There were many situations in my hobby when this brilliant device could help a lot.
Few weeks ago I stumbled upon some topic on one of FPV forums about checking frequency, spectrum, antennas etc. I realized that people are using cheap DVB-T tuner based on Realtek RTL2832U chip as spectrum analyzer, SDR (software defined radio) and even as osciloscope.
There were many situations in my hobby when this brilliant device could help a lot. This discovery was so hot, so I decided to buy such usb dongle ASAP, even at slightly bigger price (55zล ~ $16) than directly from China. I found it in one shop in my town and next day I became happy owner of this tuner ๐
This is Lifeview LV5T Deluxe (branded as NOT ONLY TV):
Itโs equipped with a little different tuner than described on rtlsdr/osmocomSDR site, Fitipower FC0013 capable of working within 22-1100MHz frequency range:
To be clear: I use Linux ๐
First step was to download and install rtl-sdr library from http://sdr.osmocom.org/trac/wiki/rtl-sdr . In this package there are also ready made udev rules to install, so root access is not required later for using it.
On this web page one can find also links to some related projects using this library.
Next step was to get pyrtlsdr library for Python as most of these project are written in that language. After installation of few more dependencies as wxPython, numpy, matplotlib etc I started testing software ๐
RTLSDR-Scanner
My first application was RTLSDR-Scanner. Kind of old school, well known spectrum analyzer:
Easy to operate, with zoom but capable to scan only within range of whole MHz, so scan in narrower range than 1MHz is not possible (you could zoom, but it doesnโt enhance frequency resolution).
So, it was quite good, but I needed more ๐
rtlsdr-waterfall
Waterfall applications is a real power of computerized spectrum analyzer!
This very easy Python script is more than useful.

You could select and measure frequency range, make pan and zoom (but on lower frequencies application crash during zooming), change sesnsitivity of tuner to remove clipping and additional strips caused by this.
Audacity
Yes, you are reading right: Audacity โ well known audio editing program. I made a little patch (not perfect) to allow change sample rate up to 10MHz because default maximum was 100kHz and typical rtl-sdr sample rate is about 2MHz, so selection tool and fft features are not working correctly.
Using rtl_sdr utility from rtl-sdr library, I dumped raw samples near desired frequency and then I imported it as raw 8 bit stereo samples into Audacity. Below are results:-)
My 35MHz transmitter on 71 channel. I have little problems with range on this channel and this picture shows why:
On this image you can see:
- this is 5 channels radio (6 peaks of synchronization pulses)
- main frequency is shifted by about 5kHz from sampling base i.e. channel frequency โ and itโs cause of poor reception
- deviation is about 3kHz (to about 8kHz from center of channel)
Using quartz for 63 channel it works much better from my experience and below is proof of this:
Shift from base frequency is less than 3kHz, so itโs better than on 71 channel.
For comparision, my simple 4 channel 40MHz transmitter:
Very tempting looks SDR# (available also on Windows) but require a lot more weird dependencies, so I put it for later.
But Iโm sure that this topic will return some day with more new cool informations ๐

Here's what you're going to do:

1. Launch the app and select your location
Setting your location speeds up channel scans and you'll also be helping other people in your area by doing so.
After selecting your location, you may or may not be prompted to pick a tuner/device. If you only have one tuner, scanning will begin immediately.
2. Let it scan
Depending on whether or not your region is already in the database, scanning may only take a minute or it could take a lot longer, in which case go put on a pot of coffee โ.
If all's gone well you should be looking at your Guide screen with live TV playing.
If this happened, congrats on being one of only 1/4th of people who manage to get it working right off the bat ๐

Troubleshooting.
If no channels are found or some channels are missing
- Make sure you're using a roof antenna. Often times the little antenna that comes with a PC tuner is inadequate. If other software is able to lock channels fine, then you know it's not your antenna.
- If your first scan only took a minute, meaning you've scanned a frequency set created by others in your same area, those people might not have managed to lock all of the available frequencies. Go into Setup > (your device name) and if 'All Channels' isn't already selected, click on the existing list name and change it to All Channels instead, then put on a pot of coffee.
- If you've already scanned an 'All Channels' frequency set, try using the TV > Explorer feature to adjust your antenna by locking a frequency which you know should be valid for your region.
- Sometimes the problem can be with a poorly written tuner driver. Try find your device driver telemetry on the website and see if other people have managed to find channels using the same version that you have. You can find your driver's version info under either Setup > (your device name), or in the Windows Device Manager.
Using TV > Explorer to locate channels
If you're missing channels or perhaps have a gimpy indoor antenna that only works when you stand there holding it like a one-legged scarecrow, the explorer tool can help find a clearer signal or missing channels.
1. Go into TV > Explorer, select your device at the top and either select your existing frequency set, or you can grab one from the library or make a new one from scratch.
2. Hit Try Lock on a frequency that you know should be correct. If your frequency isn't listed, scroll to the end of the list and add it in.
The explorer is going to keep trying to lock the signal every 5 seconds or so. Most tuner drivers (the half decent ones anyway) will keep trying to acquire a signal whilst you fiddle with your antenna. When it locks, you should see channel preview thumbnails stream in.
3. Use the green signal metre to get the best strength you can. Again, not all drivers are well behaved, some may return 100% lock or 0% and nothing in between, other drivers are written correctly and give you fine-grained sensitivity so that you can actually test your signal.
When you have channel previews coming in simply right-click any of the channel boxes and Add all channels to > Any list you like. Or, now that you've fixed your antenna, you could hit Scan on the left to rescan all of the frequencies and it'll automatically add any new channels found into the EPG.
